So often at the start of a new year, we find ourselves compelled to take positive action. It being the start of a new decade makes it especially pronounced.
The most logical option is to start with oneself, in the hope that a ripple-effect will incrementally spread positive achievements outwards.
One of the easiest ways to show self-love is to eat smart. Good nutrition creates health in all areas of our existence. In short, "Eat Good = Feel Good". As Veganuary draws to a close, it is estimated that 400,000 people committed to going meat-free this month. Of course, there are clear benefits to switching to a low carbon diet but what we are encouraging is mindful eating.
When we think mindfully of food the ripple effects of doing so, permeates individual physical health, personal wellbeing, the environment, social interaction in the local community and brings financial rewards.
A recent and successful case study of our mindful approach started life almost exactly a year ago when our in-house caterers created a well-being working lunch menu for meetings of less than 50 delegates.
The advantages of choosing this special menu were multi-dimensional:
- low food miles, featuring local and seasonal produce
- nutritious and healthy options, including mood-boosting food to support brain function and balance blood sugar levels. We purposefully decided not to go 100% vegan and instead included responsibly-sourced fish rich in omega 3 and high-welfare turkey which is rich in tryptophan, a sleep-inducing amino acid. Energy-supplying foods that make you feel fuller for longer were included to avoid a mid-afternoon slump.
- zero waste, where our kitchen aims to use root to stem, and any leftover food donated to a local food bank.
All in all, good for the environment and good for delegates attending daytime meetings.
We pledged to make a charitable donation for every wellbeing lunch sold throughout 2019. As a result, and with the help of many event organisers, we sold 282 wellbeing working lunches last year. We are pleased to announce that we have donated to the British Heart Foundation, which was our chosen charity for 2019.
To build on this menu initiative, we are hosting a showcase breakfast on Friday 31st January where guest speaker and nutritionist Rory Larkin, will look at the conflicting information surrounding the noisy world of nutrition, and how easy it is to be misled.
