A Space to Marvel at centuries of rich history

Church House Westminster has a long and rich history interspersed with notable links to royalty, Parliament and the Second World War.

Our fascinating venue history sets us apart from other London conference and events venues. When choosing Church House Westminster for your corporate or private events, your guests will become immersed in the stories of milestone, historic moments that once took place here.

    Origins

Originally founded in 1887, Church House was built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. In 1931, plans were conceived to replace the original building with a more modern Church House, designed to better meet the needs of the time. As the reality of a global recession took their toll, these plans were put on hold until 1937.

The current Grade II building was designed by the world-renowned architect, Sir Herbert Baker, and the foundation stone was laid by Her Majesty, Queen Mary on 26 June 1937. The transformation took over three years to complete, and the rebuilt Church House was officially opened by His Majesty, King George Vl, on 10 June 1940.

    War and Peace

Just months later, during The Blitz in the early part of the Second World War, Church House Westminster was directly hit. Due to its exceptionally robust construction, the building suffered minimal damage. This led the current Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, to instruct its refurbishment and repurpose its use to house the two Houses of Parliament for the remainder of the war. Many historic speeches and events took place here during this time, in particular the Churchill’s announcement of the sinking of the battleship Bismarck, delivered from the stage of our Hoare Memorial Hall.

In 1945, the first meetings of the United Nations Preparatory Commission and Security Council were also held in the Hoare Memorial Hall.

    Connecting Past and Present

Following the state funeral of former Queen Elizabeth II, and the Coronation of King Charles III, our Assembly Hall was chosen to host receptions marking these momentous occasions. Heads of State, ambassadors and royalty from all over the world were in attendance.
